The Importance of Good Oral Hygiene with Orthodontics

With braces, your smile and teeth will be straighter and healthier. Poor oral hygiene, not your braces, can harm your teeth, which is why we emphasize how crucial brushing and flossing are when wearing braces.

Your mouth will feel good for as long as you practice proper dental hygiene. Maintaining good oral hygiene by brushing, flossing, and visiting the doctor for a cleaning every six months will help you avoid problems. Dr. Yin may even suggest a few extra cleanings while wearing braces to ensure that your teeth and gums stay healthy. A hygienist can find a method to clean in and around those brackets and wires, even when it’s not always easy.

Common Dental Concerns With Orthodontics

It’s helpful to be aware of some typical issues that can develop after getting braces. Even if you take excellent care of your braces and teeth, you could still experience specific problems or adverse effects. But don’t worry: These are all issues that you can resolve by simply following some straightforward guidance.

Tooth Soreness and Sensitivity

You could experience overall discomfort in your mouth after getting braces. Your teeth will probably be tender as you get used to your new braces, and you might have a dull ache for the first three to five days. Take Tylenol or other over-the-counter medication if the pain and discomfort are severe. Teeth soreness, which typically lasts between 2-4 days after braces are first placed, can also be affected by swollen gums. During the first several days, make sure to eat soft meals.

A bite wafer is another effective pain reliever. After the process of tightening, a bite wafer is an orthodontic instrument that lessens tightness and discomfort. Chewing on the wafer improves blood flow to the gums and teeth, reducing some discomfort.

You might experience minor sores on your lips or cheeks during the early adjustment period. As your lips, cheeks, and tongue adjust to the surface of the braces, this sensitivity may linger for one to two weeks. If at any point during treatment you discover a specific area inside your mouth your braces are aggravating, place a little piece of wax on the region of your braces causing the discomfort.

You can also use Orajel and other topical oral pain medications to treat irritated places. Swishing with warm salt water is another treatment for mouth sores (one teaspoon of salt dissolved in 8 ounces of lukewarm water).

Loose Bands and Brackets

Patients who eat specific foods that are off-limits or who pick at their braces frequently cause brackets and bands to break. Put a bit of wax on the sore area if a band or bracket comes loose and causes discomfort. You should schedule an appointment as soon as possible, especially if the damaged bracket is holding a rubber band in place or if it is on one of the upper or lower front teeth.

Pokey Wires

A poking wire can occur from eating something that bent a wire or due to the teeth shifting. You can use wax to cover it. You might also try using a pencil eraser or Q-tip to bend the wire back into position. Call and set up a new appointment to have it repaired if you can’t get it adjusted in a way that will work. You don’t need to endure the discomfort of a prodding wire for weeks before your appointment.
